The 23-year-old NBA player Keon Johnson followed in the footsteps of his mother, Conswella Johnson, a high school basketball player.

A former standout basketball player herself, Keon’s mother Conswella was a two-time Class AAA Tennessee Miss Basketball winner in high school.

Likewise, she is a two-time All-Southeastern Conference selection at Auburn University.

Conswella stood beside him at all times, be it thick or thin. She was spotted supporting him in several major events.

Conswella raised Johnson as a single mother after his father’s passing.

Whereas, Keon reciprocates the love and respect for his mother by not hesitating to publicly acknowledge his parents’ sacrifices.

NBA Guard Keon Johnson’s Father’s Passing Inspired Him to Strive for Success and Find Purpose!

Keon Johnson and his father, Keith Johnson, a barber by profession, shared a strong bond like friends.

The NBA player once described their relationship dynamics during a 2023 interview with The Athletic, saying:

It wasn’t a father-son relationship. It was more best friend-to-best friend, man-to-man.

However, the father-son duo’s relationship came to a halt when Keith passed away in June 2023 at the age of 49.

On a fine Sunday morning in Johnson’s hometown of Shelbyville, his father, Keith, was out on his daily two-mile jog around the neighborhood. However, he never made it home.

Through tragedy, Johnson had found a renewed sense of purpose.

Not many know, but it was the loss of his father Keith that inspired him during a period when his career was faltering.

At the end of the Trail Blazers’ 2021-22 season, coach Chauncey Billups had a tough conversation with rookie guard Keon Johnson. Since joining the team in a February trade with the LA Clippers, Johnson had failed to make a strong impression on his coach.

Billups said his on-court performance lacked the extraordinary athleticism he had demonstrated at the NBA Draft Combine, where he set a record-breaking 48-inch vertical leap.

To make it worse, Johnson was often late to team events, developing an unfortunate reputation. Johnson needed to change if he wanted be more than just a rotation player in the NBA.

His coach, Billups, said that he would listen to him like he usually does, but he was never quite sure if Johnson truly understood or took it to heart.

Around this time, Keon Johnson lost his father and by the time the NBA Summer League arrived, Johnson stunned the Trail Blazers’ coaching staff.

His focus, determination, and physical condition had reached new heights. Johnson competed with an intensity they had never witnessed before.

The NBA player worked on himself to the level where following the Summer League and September workouts alongside seasoned players, Billups described Johnson as one of, if not the, standout performer on the team.

Johnson shared how his father’s passing deeply influenced him, stating that it inspired him to keep striving, saying:

When he passed, I knew I had to do it for him. I had to continue to live his dream and that’s what I’m trying to do.

Keon reflected on how his father pushed him to keep going regardless of thick and thin, “He was always the one who lit a spark in me, whether I was doing good, bad or ugly.

In Case You Didn’t Know

  • Keon Johnson’s net worth is estimated between $1 million and $5 million, accumulated from his rookie contract and early career earnings.
  • Selected 21st overall by the New York Knicks in the 2021 NBA Draft, he was immediately traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. Since then, he’s played for the Portland Trail Blazers, Phoenix Suns (who waived him in 2023), and now the Nets, where he signed a multi-year deal in July 2024.
