The Softball Community mourns the death of Alyson Bermudez, the Inaugural New College Coach, at 32.

Alyson Bermudez discovered her love for softball at just five years old. By age eight, she demonstrated remarkable natural pitching talent, setting the foundation for her athletic career.

Growing up in Londonderry, New Hampshire, Bermudez developed her skills through elite travel and high school softball programs before advancing to play collegiately at Lasell University in Newton, Massachusetts.

Despite being the number one recruit for Lasell University, Bermudez faced a significant setback when she suffered an overuse shoulder injury before beginning her college career.

Though she persevered through extensive physical therapy, the injury, later attributed to poor mechanics she had been taught, prevented her from reaching her full potential as a player.

This challenging experience sparked Bermudez’s coaching philosophy. She dedicated herself to teaching healthy mechanics and a positive mentality, determined to prevent young athletes from experiencing similar setbacks.

Her mission extended beyond technical instruction—she committed herself to serving as both a coach and mentor, focusing on building her athletes’ confidence and personal development.

Bermudez’s coaching career flourished when she moved to Florida in September 2021.

She joined the Bishop Verot High School softball staff and worked with several travel programs throughout southwest Florida.

As part of the Tincher Pitching School, she collaborated with experts in body movement and softball to teach efficient, healthy techniques in all aspects of the game.

In 2024, Bermudez achieved a significant milestone when she became the inaugural head coach for New College of Florida’s softball program.

Under her leadership, the Mighty Banyans posted a 9-38 record in their first season.

Despite the challenging start, the team made remarkable progress, including a three-game winning streak and a series victory over Trinity Baptist College in March.

A Courageous Battle And Lasting Legacy

The softball community received devastating news when New College of Florida announced the passing of Alyson Bermudez on April 27, 2025. She was just 32 years old.

In March 2023, Bermudez was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer called Mucinous ovarian cancer.

She openly shared her health journey through a GoFundMe page, explaining the aggressive nature of her diagnosis and the challenges in finding appropriate treatment. Bermudez wrote,

“It’s very aggressive and, unfortunately, I’ve been delayed in getting the right treatment due to doctors not being sure how to treat. After finding a specialist who is experienced with this cancer, my plan is now the six months of folfox chemo and a hipec procedure after, which is a highly invasive, but potentially life-saving surgery.”

Despite her personal battle, Bermudez continued to lead her team with the same passion and dedication that defined her career.

New College of Florida honored her memory in a heartfelt statement:

“Aly was the inaugural head coach of New College Softball. She was passionate, courageous, full of energy, and cared deeply for her family, friends, coaches, and athletes. She loved the game of softball and used it as a powerful tool to positively impact so many people.”
